Do This Every Day To Boost Your Lifespan By 8 Years: Study

If toned muscles and a flat stomach weren’t reasons enough to walk every day, then this most certainly will be. According to a research presented at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) congress, London just 25 minutes of brisk walking could reduce ageing and increase the average lifespan of a person by 7 years.

Sanjay Sharma, a professor of inherited cardiac diseases in sports cardiology at St George’s University Hospitals called this study “very relevant” and added that moderate levels of exercise daily can reduce the risk of dying from a heart attack by half in people that are in their 50s and 60s.

This might come as startling news to many but coronary heart disease is the single biggest killers in the United Kingdom (UK) causing one death every second. For the study, 69 healthy individuals, non-smokers aged between 30 and 60 who didn’t exercise regularly were tested. These participants were asked to engage in regular aerobics, high-intensity training and strength-training and monitored over 6 months. Researchers found that this exercise triggered an anti-ageing process and repair old DNA.

Professor Sanjay Sharma said, “Exercise buys you three to seven additional years of life. It is an anti-depressant, it improves cognitive function and there is now evidence that it may retard the onset of dementia.

“He also said that no matter how old a person is, he or she should walk or jog for at least 20 or 25 minutes daily. This is essential especially for those with an extremely sedentary lifestyle. According to professor Christi Deaton from the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, “The study brings a bit more understanding of why physical activity has that effect. It helps us understand the process of cellular ageing as that’s what drives our organ system and body ageing, and the effects physical activity can have on the cellular level.”
