As a young child, Brad Chaney said he had little to no immune system. Some of his earliest memories include high fevers and routine trips to a Bay Area emergency room.
“Sometimes my temperature was as high as 106,” he said. “My medical bills were bigger than any of my parents’ other bills combined.”
Nonetheless, when Brad turned 8, his parents were determined to take him to Disneyland, despite a temperature of 103. To save money, the family stayed with an elderly great aunt, known as “Aunt Vera,” who lived near the large theme park.
“When Aunt Vera saw how many medications I was on, she was appalled,” said Brad. “She asked my parents, ‘Are you trying to poison that kid?’”
Apparently Aunt Vera said that Brad “needed to build up his body,” and promptly suggested an $18 remedy consisting of vitamin C, a liquid multi-vitamin supplement and an herbal laxative to “clean him out.”
