Whom would you rather trust with your health issues regarding diabetes, celiac disease, kidney failure, a sensible weight loss plan , food allergy menus and products and more? These are only a few of several dozen skills registered, licensed dietitians are trained in as practitioners of medical nutrition therapy. All too often the alternatives are marketing schemes for expensive and unproven supplements or quick weight loss schemes [“Dietetics board warned: Act now or be sued,” July 9].
At no time during my education to become a registered, licensed dietitian did I ever resent the number of hours needed to obtain my bachelor’s degree. Because nutrition and dietetics is a science and science is always testing its hypotheses and outcomes, (think fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and the much maligned egg) I value the “onerous” registration, licensing and continuing education requirements.
That Chicago address you mention is the location of the headquarters of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, formerly known as the American Dietetic Association. Its volunteer board administers the registration exam, conducts an annual meeting, collaborates with other professions, serves on many other health care boards and government entities, and tracks the membership .
Be careful what you ask for. Do we want to jeopardize the health and safety of Iowa residents just because someone less qualified wants to sell a so-called “natural” supplement or quick weight loss scheme among other bogus counseling.
