New research questions the safety of herbal supplements readily available online. These supplements, used for sexual enhancement, all include active ingredients that have the possible psychoactive effects of anxiety, hallucinations, and mood changes.
Researcher Giovanni Martinotti, MD, PhD, of G. d’Annunzio University in Chieti-Pescara, Italy expressed his concerns about the availability of these supplements. He cautions, “The possible impact on population health, particularly among subjects with psychiatric disorders, who are usually at risk for sexual dysfunction, may be significant.”
Martinotti and other researchers reviewed over 100 web sites in America and Italy that sell sexual enhancement supplements. All of the sites sold products that contained active ingredients of horny goat weed, yohimbine, ginkgo biloba, and/or maca. These ingredients do have sexual enhancement properties, but they also have psychoactive properties.
